
DMC Overview
The Disability Mainstreaming Committee at Pwani University is fully committed to fostering excellence in education, research, and innovation. The committee recognizes the vital importance of promoting equal participation by individuals with disabilities in all aspects of development, considering it a fundamental requirement for sustainable progress. Consequently, the university endeavors to incorporate disability-related issues and experiences into the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of policies, programs, and projects at all levels.
With this objective in mind, the committee has been established to spearhead the integration of gender and disability mainstreaming initiatives at Pwani University. The primary responsibilities of the committee include:
- Facilitating effective communication and collaboration between the University Management, the National Council for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWDs), and individuals with disabilities, including students, staff, and other stakeholders.
- Developing and formulating measures and policies aimed at ensuring equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
- Maximizing efforts to provide assistive devices, equipment, and access to necessary information for persons with disabilities.
- Advocating and lobbying for various forms of assistance, such as scholarships, loans, fee subsidies, and other means of support, specifically tailored to students with disabilities.
- Leading the registration process for individuals with disabilities, ensuring their official recognition and representation.
- Advocating for improved accessibility to products and services, enabling full socio-economic and environmental participation of individuals with disabilities.
