Our Services

The Pwani University Disability Mainstreaming Committee (PUDMC) deeply values the inclusion of individuals with disabilities as an integral part of our diverse community. Our committee takes a proactive role in fostering an accessible and inclusive learning and working environment at Pwani University, while ensuring compliance with the Kenyan Constitution and Persons with Disabilities Act, 2003 .

PUDMC serves as a central resource for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, offering vital information, procedures, and services related to disabilities. We provide expert guidance in developing and implementing best practices for disability-related initiatives across the university.

PUDMC offers the following services to the Pwani University community:

Consultation

PUDMC is available for consultation, providing valuable insights and best practices on accessibility and inclusion for individuals with disabilities. To initiate a consultation, please contact us via email at dmc@pu.ac.ke or call us at +254 725 91 61 45. We are here to assist you with various topics, including:

  • Available resources for students and employees with disabilities at Pwani University
  • Crafting accommodation statements for programs, events, and applications
  • Responding to reasonable accommodation requests from students, employees, or visitors
  • Implementing inclusive and accessible program practices
  • Guidelines for captioning and audio descriptions for video or online content
  • Ensuring accessibility for in-person, remote, or hybrid events
  • Assessing physical accessibility of spaces used for programs and activities
  • Facilitating access for service on campus
  • Effective communication strategies with community members who are hearing impaired. 

 

Training

PUDMC provides educational sessions and customized trainings to increase awareness and promote accessibility and inclusion for individuals with disabilities within the Pwani University community. We can tailor trainings or facilitate focused discussions for departments with a minimum of ten participants. Additionally, PUDMC collaborates with the Pwani University Library and Lab to offer comprehensive disability inclusion training.

Technology and Equipment

PUDMC, in collaboration with the PU Library and Lab, offers individuals the opportunity to explore and evaluate assistive technologies that may benefit them.

The Pwani University Disability Mainstreaming Committee provides a range of services to help ensure that students with disabilities are fully integrated into university life. These services include the provision of accessible classrooms and learning materials, as well as specially trained support staff to help students with disabilities overcome any barriers they may face in their studies. The committee also strives to raise awareness of disability issues throughout the university community, by organizing events and activities aimed at promoting a more inclusive campus culture. PUDMC also work closely with local disability advocacy groups, NCPWD and service providers to ensure that students with disabilities have access to the resources and support they need to succeed in their academic and personal lives. The Pwani University Disability Mainstreaming Committee is committed to creating a more welcoming and inclusive university environment for students of all abilities.
