Our Strategic Initiatives

Our strategic initiatives at Pwani University (PU) align with our vision of creating an inclusive and supportive environment that upholds the rights and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their impairments. These strategic initiatives are in accordance with the Kenyan Constitution and the Disability Act, which emphasize equal opportunities, non-discrimination, and the full participation of persons with disabilities. Some of our strategic initiatives in relation to these legislative frameworks include:

  1. Enhancing Accessibility: We will continue to prioritize accessibility by implementing measures to improve physical infrastructure, ensuring barrier-free access to buildings, classrooms, and facilities for individuals with disabilities. This includes providing ramps, handrails, elevators, and accessible restrooms in compliance with accessibility standards.

  2. Inclusive Curriculum: We will work towards incorporating inclusive practices into our academic curriculum, ensuring that it addresses the diverse learning needs of students with disabilities. This involves providing appropriate learning materials, accessible formats, and reasonable accommodations to support their educational journey.

  3. Reasonable Accommodations: We will establish clear guidelines and procedures for providing reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities. This includes ensuring the availability of assistive technologies, specialized equipment, and support services necessary for their full participation in academic and extracurricular activities.

  4. Sensitization and Awareness Programs: We will conduct regular sensitization and awareness programs for staff, students, and the wider university community to promote a better understanding of disability-related issues, combat stigma, and foster an inclusive and respectful environment for all.

  5. Collaboration with Disability Organizations: We will actively collaborate with disability organizations, including the National Council for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWDs), to share best practices, seek guidance, and advocate for the rights and needs of individuals with disabilities at both institutional and national levels.

  6. Research and Innovation: We will encourage and support research initiatives focused on disability-related topics, seeking innovative solutions to address challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. This includes promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and involving individuals with disabilities in the research process.

  7. Scholarships and Support Programs: We will explore opportunities to establish scholarships, grants, and financial assistance programs specifically targeted at students with disabilities, in line with the provisions of the Kenyan Constitution and the Disability Act.

By aligning our future plans with the Kenyan Constitution and the Disability Act, we are dedicated to creating a university environment that ensures the full and equal participation of individuals with disabilities, promoting their rights, and fostering their personal and academic development.
